Overhead Cranes & Slings Operator Training
Course Objective
Upgrade material handling practices within your company by teaching the basics of safe crane and sling operation to increase productivity and efficiency while reducing the risk of product damage, property damage, and accidents. This will assist you in meeting OSHA requirements described in 29CFR1910.179 for Overhead & Gantry Cranes and 29CFR1910.184 for Slings.
There are two parts to this overhead crane safety program that includes a 2-hour classroom session and an operator evaluation where your employees can demonstrate their ability to operate the company equipment safely and efficiently.
Classroom Course Content
- Review material handling regulations to comply with OSHA
- Complete Pre-Shift checks and inspections
- Analyzing the lift
- Use of sling charts for load limits and capacity
- Maintaining a safe distance
- Lifting, moving, placing loads
- Standard safe practices
- Controls and basic operation
- Use of chains, slings, spreader bars, grabbers, and other attachments
- All other OSHA-required topics
Practical Evaluation Content
- Each Operator will be evaluated on the safe use of cranes/slings, using equipment they normally operate
- Evaluations are done one employee at a time, allowing others to return to normal work duties waiting their turn
A written evaluation of this observation will be completed, reviewed with participants and given to the company for their records
Overhead Crane Safety Tips
- Inspect cranes, hoists, slings, shackles, etc. before use
- Load must be within crane capacity
- Always bring hook over the load center of gravity to prevent swinging
- No side pulls unless approved by an authorized person
- Ensure load is balanced – lift a few inches and pause
- Sound a warning when approaching people
- Move the load without hitting obstructions
- Never carry a load over people
- Avoid hitting other cranes operating on the same runway
- Stay at the controls while the load is suspended
