Forklift Driver Training (Powered Industrial Trucks)

Course Objective:

This is a two-part forklift safety program. A classroom session lasting about 2 hours illustrates safe and efficient operation of an industrial lift truck and covers all topics required by OSHA Standard 29CFR1910.178. Following successful completion of a test, operators will be evaluated while driving the equipment they use while performing their routine work functions in their everyday work environment.

Classroom Course Content

  • Review legislative requirements
  • Outline responsibilities for employers and employees
  • Discuss actual incidents and near hits
  • Consequences of unsafe driving
  • Pre-shift inspections
  • Center of Gravity and Stability discussions
  • Forklift truck capacity exercise
  • Site-specific vehicle controls and hazards
  • Differences between forklifts and over-the-road cars or trucks
  • Basic battery safety and/or propane cylinder safety
  • Fall arrest, if applicable
  • All other OSHA-required topics

Practical Evaluation Content

  • Complete a pre-shift check of vehicles that will be used in the evaluation looking for damage, loose or missing parts, examination of hoses and cables for damage and leaks, adequate fluid levels, smooth operation of all controls, condition of tires, manufacturer recommended items, etc.
  • Inspection and Use of fall arrest equipment, where required.
  • Operation of the vehicle including driving with and without loads, in both forward and reverse direction, picking and placing loads, parking the vehicle while complying with the capacity limit of machine.
  • Completion of written operator evaluations

Battery Charging Safety Tips

  • For onboard charging, approach the charger carefully to avoid damage. Set vehicle parking brake.
  • Select correct charger/battery combination, if there are several chargers available.
  • Add water after charging to avoid spilled electrolyte. Wear PPE. Electrolyte is a strong corrosive.
  • Ensure charger is off before disconnecting the battery to avoid sparks.
  • Avoid touching both battery terminals at the same time.
  • Wearing jewelry in the battery charging area increases your chances of electrical shock and serious injury.
